Ssangyong REXTON II
actyon
Ssangyong REXTON II
SsangYong has done a mild update on its Rexton off-roader, which now rejoices in the title of Rexton II. The only external difference is the front-end revision, which includes a new bumper and lights. Inside, an electrically-controlled driver's seat is now available on higher-specification SX models, and there are now individual air-conditioning vents for rear passengers.
The suspension has been reworked, too, in the interests of greater comfort, and the otherwise unaltered Mercedes-Benz five-speed automatic transmission can now be shifted manually by using either a thumb shift on the gearlever or buttons mounted on the steering wheel.

The rest of the car, including the 163bhp 2.7-litre turbo diesel engine, remains the same as before.
Ssangyong Musso
Ssangyong Musso
Ssangyong Musso
The Musso 4x4 was launched in the UK in 1995 and failed to create much of an impression for four years, largely due to the fact that we like our premium badges on big 4x4s. The ironic thing is that if you pop the bonnet, youll see a premium lump of Mercedes-Benz iron staring back at you but most never bothered to investigate that far. As a used buy, the Musso makes an excellent value family 4x4. Before you sign up for an MPV, give one a look.

The Musso is one of the first 4x4 vehicles to look remotely sleek. The angle of the windscreen is raked back to give a purposeful, sporty image, at odds with the barn-door design of many of its rivals. Parked next to a Nissan Patrol or Land Rover Discovery, the Musso looks a classier, more expensive piece of equipment, possibly even in the Range Rover or Toyota Land Cruiser bracket to the uninitiated. In practical terms, the Musso also makes sense as long as you dont need space for seven.

SSANGYONG Korando
The SsangYong Korando may be many things but bland doesnt enter the equation. Its looks will doubtless divide opinion but whether you love or hate its curious styling, one things not up for debate the value proposition. The 4x4 market is overpopulated by tiny tinny barbie trucks that wilt at the sight of a muddy pathway. The Korando is built of much sterner stuff and if you can track one down, youll be treated to a genuinely tough customer.
Ssangyong Rodius
Ssangyong Rodius
Ssangyong Rodius
Aimed at the sort of buyer who's looking for value and space the Rodius is certainly a bit left field. In its home market it's available as an 11 seater, but in the UK it's only offered with seating for seven. That means there's a fair bit of space in there, and it's comfortable, too. Its size makes it less relaxing to drive though, it's wide and long and the ride and handling isn't the sharpest either. It wallows about on its soft suspension making for a choppy ride. Power comes from a 2.7-litre common-rail turbodiesel with 163bhp. It's mated to an automatic transmission and although all come with ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) as standard you're unlikely to ever be pushing it hard enough to ever need it, though its reassuring that it's there for any emergency manoeuvres.

Being a budget orientated machine the interior is functional rather than pretty. But it's not the interior styling that everyone's talking about, as the Rodius is something of an odd looker. 'Odd' is perhaps being rather kind, too, as it's been described by many as one of the world's ugliest cars. For a manufacturer without much brand penetration it's never likely be anything but a tiny seller as a result. Its unconventional rear is said to resemble the open deck on luxury powerboats, however if the rest of the boat looked like the Rodius we'd scuttle it. It may be big and cheap, but there are far, far better cars out there new or used.

low heavily into corners. The ride is also bumpy and unresolved. Still, it's good off-road because of the heavy-duty running gear, and promises good reliability courtesy of well-proven mechanicals. And prices are low enough to at least earn it consideration as a comfortable and inexpensive workhorse.
Ssangyong Kyron
Ssangyong Kyron
Ssangyong Kyron
Ssangyong's best-selling model is certain to be noticed; no other vehicle looks like it. The front is bold but well-proportioned - it's the rear that stands out, looking as if it belongs to a completely different vehicle! But its high-rise, bulbous profile does at least realise a staggering 625-litre boot, though rear passenger legroom isn't as good as it could be. No problems for front-seat passengers, who sit atop high (but too-flat) chairs, facing a well-built, attractive dashboard. It's one that's well-equipped too, even in base S guise; the best-selling SE trim includes leather, climate control, CD autochanger, even ESP stability control!

Such electronic safety measures are welcome at first, as the Kyron has soft suspension that generates lots of lean in corners. But press on and you'll find it trustworthy, with pretty direct steering and decent levels of damping. Sadly, the ride doesn't bear similar scrutiny. It's poor, with the separate chassis creating shuddering motions, even at slower speeds. And while the 2.0-litre Mercedes-designed engine offers a healthy 141bhp, plus OK economy for one so large, its too loud under acceleration, while the weight of the Kyron blunts acceleration. It does, however, offer stacks of mid-range torque, and complements the Kyron's very able chassis when motoring off-road. Many models even have Land Rover-style Hill Descent Control, which works well. Such ability makes the Kyron a useful workhorse at a competitive price; just don't expect compact SUV refinement.
